Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
The filmmaker's daring satire addresses the demanding standards for women's appearance as well as the feared consequences of advancing years. Demi Moore delivers a masterful portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress forced into hosting an aerobics show on the small screen. Pushed out by her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out a secretive and horrifying process known as the Substance. This produces a youthful duplicate called Sue, leading to an increasingly parasitic dynamic among both women. Friday 17 October, Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This suspenseful thriller includes Keira Knightley as Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for some time off from covering global conflict to board a high-end voyage accompanied by a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her husband, and other affluent guests. Yet once an unknown lady goes overboard overnight and all passengers denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity awaken. Available now, Netflix
Presence
Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills through this innovative ghostly tale shot entirely from the perspective of the spirit. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the filming device – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. Chloe seems sensing the poltergeist, and it seems defensive toward her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
The iconic actor embraces his eccentric image through this self-referential adventure. He acts as a self-obsessed celebrity playing himself who agrees to a $1m payday to appear at a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by the CIA to spy on the potential kingpin, the actor's unique performing skills proves useful. This Saturday, prime time, the Channel 4 network
This Creepy Thriller
The director's locked-room horror holds up well without requiring a continuation. Set in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has left the children on edge. Once Finney is taken by the villain and locked up in a dungeon, he anticipates a terrible outcome. Yet the non-functional line on the wall repeatedly calls, with spooky callers offering help, while the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, late evening, the Film4 channel
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who declares early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals set about monetising the people's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, though Chastain manages to present the real-life figure in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, on Film4
The Spy Mystery
The current week's another release from the filmmaker is a espionage tale as tight like the turtlenecks used by Fassbender's British agent. He is tasked with uncovering a traitor among the team from a group of five – among them is his own wife. The two stars are experts of understated style, so a delicious psychological game of truth or lie takes place. The supporting cast join in the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, the Sky channel
