The star has handed over the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound award winnings to the trust for venues, which works to save the UK's small music venues.

Fender was given the award on 16 October as his new release the album was chosen as the best record of the past year.

The musician has decided to donate the funds to the trust, in recognition of the vital role grassroots venues had in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the shows I played around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," stated Sam Fender. "These locations are renowned, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Recently, well-known musicians including the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its initiatives to support the industry, by applying a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which benefits local stages.

Sam Fender also joined in, generating more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to help 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

The money supported spaces that were facing imminent closure due to issues arising from flooding, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Some locations received financial assistance in improving infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted musicians and fans.

"The idea that funds from concerts in major spaces supports the local stages, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just sensible," the star has stated.

The musician is not the first artist to donate his Mercury Prize winnings to charitable organizations.

Back when Pulp received the prize in the mid-90s for their record the album, lead singer the singer declared that the band would give their prize money to the charity War Child.

In 2002, artist she shared her award across multiple charities, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also contributed a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked new equipment," she explained to outlets.

Two years ago, the band gave their funds to the community center that nurtured their group, alongside other independent music bodies.

Also winners that year they gave their award to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was diagnosed the illness.

"Winning was ample," stated artist Small. "The prize was the extra but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the cake. So our success affected another person's life."

In the past week, the trust shared it had saved a couple of grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to public stewardship.

One venue in that area and the other in that location were bought under the community ownership scheme, which is funded by Arts Council England and music fans who acquire "ownership units" in the properties.
